Harlow Council marks milestone with completion of 1,000th new parking space

News / Wed 18th Mar 2026 at 09:50am

HARLOW Council has completed its 1,000th new residential parking space as part of its ambitious Open Parking Programme. This is a major milestone in the council’s work to improve accessibility, reduce congestion and renew neighbourhoods across the town.

The programme was launched to tackle long‑standing parking pressures in housing estates. It focuses on opening up underused and neglected areas, converting poor‑quality informal parking spots, and creating hundreds of new free bays to make parking safer and more reliable for residents.

This latest milestone forms part of a series of upgrades delivered over the past year, following the creation of 500 new spaces in the previous year.

Celebrating the milestone, Councillor David Carter, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:

“Reaching our 1,000th new parking space shows the scale of our investment in improving residential parking across the town. This programme is about giving residents the convenience, safety and peace of mind they’ve been asking for.

“I’m pleased to announce that not only have we reached our 1,000‑space target – but we will also exceed it by 31 March. From Abbotsweld to Orchard Croft to Willowfield we have created literally thousands of new free parking spaces.

“”The lack of parking spaces and inconsiderate parking is one of the most common concerns raised by residents. That’s why we continue to create more and more spaces. While this won’t solve every problem, it is a significant improvement programme and another example of how we are renewing our neighbourhoods and Building Harlow’s Future.”

There seems to be a lack of disabled parking spaces around the town centre. Is there any plan to increase them or properly police the number of people who use their relatives' disabled badges inconsiderately and illegally?

Collins Meadow, Rye croft, Wooding Grove, Fold croft, how about looking at the parking in these areas, especially along the main road by the shops and down opposite Canons Brook. Entering Collins Meadow the grass verges, drains and pavements are ruined. People parking on pavements, blocking access for prams and wheelchair users. It's a joke. Homes have more than 1 car and these areas are not equipped for this. Fold croft should be permits, so many yellow lines along the main route yet not enough parking spaces for residents. Parking tickets are daily handed out to residents which is unfair. Where is everyone to park if no allocated spaces, especially for those in the flats.

Council are tackling this the wrong way round. The housing estates - RESIDENTIAL areas are choked up with COMMERCIAL vehicles. It is those that should be oarked in the new parking areas.

Had garages knocked down in Rivermill , but we now have someone doing up vans as a business right at the back of our garden (panel beating, sanding and banging)we were told by the council it wasn't to be done the fumes of paints and diesel is over welming at times ! The resident has been told to stop these activities and is just ignoring it they were supposed to put a sign up ,YES still waiting but he will probably ignore that anyway it is causing me and other residents anxiety as we can't sit in garden or have windows open dreading the summer.

Repainting the white lines does not constitute new parking spaces in Little Cattins, no new space created and the people that park over two spaces continue to do so. Absolute waste of time and money! If you are going to do it, do it properly and create more spaces…. Not more headlines for you patting yourself on the back for doing a rubbish job.
