Harlow Council steps in to clean every street sign in the town

News / Thu 19th Mar 2026 at 08:35am

HARLOW Council has launched a new programme to clean every sign, bollard and item of highways furniture across the town – helping improve how streets look and making signage clearer and easier for residents, visitors and emergency services to navigate.

Teams are working in every neighbourhood to wash down signs, bollards and highways furniture that many of which have become dirty or difficult to see, giving them a thorough clean.

This simple but effective work improves visibility and contributes to a cleaner, better‑maintained street environment.

The programme is running alongside the council’s Street Scene Priority Taskforce, which continues to clear abandoned roadwork signs, rusty posts, damaged railings, rogue estate agent boards, old sandbags and traffic cones.

These improvements are part of a wider package of initiatives by Harlow Council to “renew our neighbourhoods” and address long‑standing maintenance gaps not being met by Essex County Council.

Commenting on the programme, Councillor Nicky Purse, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We have been stepping in to take care of the everyday infrastructure that shapes how our town looks and feels – from highway signs to railings, bollards and drainage. These may seem like small things, but together they make a big difference in restoring pride in every street and neighbourhood.

“The new highway sign‑cleaning programme builds on the work of our Street Scene Priority Taskforce, the recent improvements to our underpasses, and the autumn and winter programme of clearing gullies and drains to keep our town safe from flooding.

“We are leaving no stone unturned as we renew our neighbourhoods and Build Harlow’s Future, including addressing the long‑standing issues that haven’t been tackled by the county council.”

Great to see some action on some long overdue works taking place that will help tidy up the town.Hopefully they are requesting or witholding some payment to Essex County Council who's responsibilties they are taking on.

Hopefully they'll get rid of the flags at the same time or don't lamp posts count? "Street scene priority" and "take care of everyday infrastructure to shape how our town looks and feels" - hollow words when you look at all the tatty flags blighting the town. Before anyone says it's not the local council's responsibility it would only take a quiet word from Dan the Man to his buddies in County hall to alleviate us all from this festering and intimidatory eyesore.

Well said Micko. Me thinks all these announcements have Absolutely Nothing to do with the local election in May. Afterwards, Dan and Council staff will enjoy a well earned rest.

Micko, how is the national flag intimidatory? If you went abroad would you expect all of their flags to be taken down for your benefit?

Well said Peter Smith. A handful of snowflakes are obsessed with flags. Many countries have raise the flag ceremonies and renditions of their national anthems to start the school day. Something we should consider. I posted recently that I was in Dorset and all the charming villages are full of our flags and people there really support it. Why is Harlow different?

Steps in? No. Stepping in is when someone is not related to the task lends a helping hand. One steps in to baby sit for a parent when nobody is available. One steps in to cover a manager who is sick. One steps in to take the rubbish out for a neighbour when they're not home. The council does not step in to clean up signs they are required to handle. This is absolutely their work and we should not be praising them for doing what all of us are paying them to do. Absurdity to say the least.

Phil, the article says "These improvements are part of a wider package of initiatives by Harlow Council to “renew our neighbourhoods” and address long‑standing maintenance gaps not being met by Essex County Council." So they are stepping in. It does mean though that we are effectively paying twice.

Phil. All roads, (ex private ones), street furniture, lamp columns, traffic signs, barriers and protective fencing etc, are the property of and maintained by ECC. Harlow suffers, similar to the majority of other area’s across the UK, from the lack of action by their respective Highway Authorities (County Councils) to maintain their property. Dan Swords is trying to achieve some pride in Harlow by tiding up and removing the old pieces of street furniture, thus giving the Harlow an improved appearance to not only the residents but to visitors.

I notice that the sign opposite the Leisure Zone shows a right turn to Harvey Street. This sign has been up for many years and although Harvey Street doesn’t exist ! It still hasn’t been corrected.

Perhaps they should use convicted criminals on unpaid work to do it, or even out of work people who are on benifits and fit to work.

Isn't cleaning the town part of their responsibilities as councillors? I also thought it was part of their job to reply to residents emails, but I may be wrong! Too busy cleaning up the town obviously. And of course buying every part of it as they go. If they really wanted to be helpful perhaps they could tell us how much debt the town is in.

Gary Roberts, if you actually bothered to read the Budget papers, which are in the public domain, you will find the answer.

Another strong message that our LOCAL Council is putting Harlow first. This is a COUNTRY Council task that we pay for, but Dan and his team are cutting through the red tape to improve Harlow. With regards to flags and whether they should be up or down, we are missing the discussions as to why people are putting them up or wanting them down in the first place. This aspect is a NATIONAL issue, not a LOCAL Council one. The division across the UK is saddening with the more extreme views gaining traction (Greens and Reform), but it is because the traditional mid ground (Labour and Conservative) nationally are so weak. This has nothing to do with Harlow Council, our LOCAL representatives of our town, who under Dan and his team are doing an amazing job.

Val really? So how much did the Odeon deal cost? How much is the town in debt?

Gary check the financial statements of HDC. They are on the Council Website and also in the Budget. I am not doing your work for you.

As a large percentage of the signs, bollards and lights etc are damaged or missing entirely this should not take too long should it...
