WHEN a child loses their mum, the world can suddenly feel confusing, overwhelming and incredibly lonely. St Clare Hospice understands how deep that impact can be – and how the right support, at the right time can make a huge difference.

Which is why the Hospice is now inviting referrals for Hearts Without Her, a special bereavement support workshop for children and young people who are grieving the death of their mother.

Taking place on 1 April, the three-hour session offers a safe, supportive space where children can begin to make sense of their loss, remember their mum and connect with others who understand what they’re going through.

Led by St Clare’s experienced family therapist Amanda Orange and specially trained volunteers, the workshop uses creative activities, memory-making, storytelling and gentle group conversations to help children express their feelings.

Amanda said: “Losing a mum can turn a child’s world upside down. What we aim to do with Hearts Without Her is create a space where they feel safe enough to begin expressing what they’re feeling, in their own way and at their own pace. Being around others who get it can make a huge difference, helping them feel less isolated and more supported as they navigate their grief.”

Ava started attending a similar bereavement group at St Clare Hospice after her dad, Bob, died. At first, she was anxious and unsure, but with gentle encouragement and a welcoming environment, she slowly began to open up.

Through creative activities and connecting with other young people, Ava found ways to talk about her feelings and remember her dad. Over time, she grew in confidence, felt less alone and developed strategies to help her cope.

Amanda added: “Hearts Without Her is designed with that same care. Children are never pressured to share more than they want to – the session is flexible, child-led and focused on meeting each young person where they are.”

The workshop is being held at the Hospice in Hastingwood and all materials and refreshments will be provided. No prior connection to St Clare Hospice is required.

If you are supporting a child who you feel could benefit, you can make a referral directly to St Clare’s Children & Young Person’s Bereavement Support Service by emailing [email protected] or calling 01279 773762.

Referrals can also be made by any health or social care professional working with bereaved families, as well as schools.
