Third of people say university degree not worth it, as student loan inquiry begins

Education: Secondary / Tue 2nd Jun 2026 at 07:03am

AN inquiry by MPs into the student loan system in England begins on Tuesday, with evidence from student organisations and experts reports the BBC.

The National Union of Students (NUS) said the inquiry should look at the graduate earnings repayment threshold and interest rates.

But the government said the current student loan system protected lower-earning graduates, with repayments linked to earnings and loans written off at the end of their term.

New research published separately suggests a third of people now think a university degree isn’t worth the time and money.

Iain Duncan Smith of the Centre for Social Justice describes the solution as: "Scrapping the university Ponzi scheme with an apprenticeship revolution". See https://www.centreforsocialjustice.org.uk/newsroom/27-young-non-eu-migrants-hired-for-every-young-brit-since-2020-analysis-reveals

It is much larger than that, we do not need a nation of arts graduates. Unless it is a STEM degree, it is pointless going to university. it does mask the youth unemployment issue though, which is what it was always about. Look at the debt these students graduate with and they need to understand is it going to be a ROI. It is not worth it to get a job which tops out 40-50K

In the 80's and early 90's, a degree meant something .Then in the late 90's the internet came and the start of human replacement began. Now we are in the next step of A.I. and Robotics and we are starting to see why so many are seeing degree's as pretty useless. Unless you join the armed forces and get a degree through experience and assistance, then you will leave uni with close to £60k of debt or more. According to the house of commons library dated 10th of December 2025, Students still owe tax payers, £267 billion pounds in unpaid fee's. Universities are a modern day scam leaving most students with a huge debt and very little to show for the degree in their hands. I genuinely worry for the future of kids in senior schools today
