Former councillor asks: “Whatever happened to the world class cycle tracks ?”

A FORMER Labour councillor (and keen cyclist) has asked for a progress report on Harlow Council’s promise for world class cycle tracks.

Jake Shepherd asked a question at Thursday night’s Cabinet.
Mr Shepherd said: “The improvements to the town’s underpasses is undeniable, but for many the state of our cycle tracks is still a daily disappointment. Can you tell me if these are the same world beating cycle tracks that had been envisaged when this administration first took office, and if not, when can residents expect them?
Reply from Councillor Dan Swords (Leader of the Council):
Many of Harlow’s cycle tracks have seen dramatic upgrades already with multi- million-pound investments in recent years and further significant news on ourcycle network is expected shortly as we progress towards our comprehensive London-style cycle hire scheme.
Cycle tracks should only be updated when cyclists start contributing to their upkeep. IMO they are not taxed enough - actually, they are not taxed. Unlike motorists.
Thr stretch of cycle tracks from. Monkswick Road Tottenham Howard Way crossing and onwards to Minchin Road is more massive craters, than usable track. What's the point of cycles for hire, when large parts of the network are in this appalling state.
Where has all the benches gone along these cycle tracks, not good if you’re disabled and need to rest.
