AS you may know, we often go to the Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner’s website to look at the crime statistics for Harlow and the rest of Essex.
With a new Labour government and a new Home Secretary in Yvette Cooper, there will be a number of aspects of the criminal justice system that they will want to look out at the very least.
We will continue to focus on unsolved crimes as it is a key matter of public interest.
It is holding up a mirror to the challenges in the whole criminal justice system in 2024.
On Tuesday night at 10pm there is a programme on Channel 4 called Britains’s Unsolved Crimewave.
Sometimes you have to look at these statistics and flip them on their head.

For a town with lots of cycle paths it is appalling that only 1.4% of bicycle thefts get solved. A report by the European Cyclists Federation revealed that a 2015 Montreal study showed half of all bicycles stolen are from ‘fly-parking’ locations (i.e. locations not intended for bicycle parking, such as lampposts and fences). The answer is increased secure cycle parking at entertainment, employment and shopping centres. Flat blocks need need much better cycle storage. If the politicos want sustainable transport and people out of their cars, then they need to spend some money on it like I experienced working in the Netherlands nearly 25 years ago. See report at https://ecf.com/news-and-events/news/bike-theft-across-europe-and-securing-better-bike-parking
Not enough police about thats the problem.
These figures are "reported" crimes, the true figures would be a lot worse, however lots of crimes go unreported due to people having so little confidence in the police and their ability to actually do something about the crime.
It is absolutely disgusting how little crime is solved. The prisons are full to bursting I wonder if there is a connection.
