There is no deterrent to stop shoplifters (although this looks more like a kind of one man looting spree). The police have no interest in shoplifting. Every business must, it seems, suffer its regular shoplifters. The courts haven't even punished a thug for a violent assault that took place in Harlow! It seems our 'protectors', our governments and the police, consider all types of criminal activity far too expensive to punish with prison sentences. If this person is caught what will happen? A suspended sentence of some sort? A fine? Community order? Very little will happen to him. The violent thug mentioned today on the BBC's website got a suspended sentence despite 20 odd other crimes. I'm surprised the thug wasn't presented with a book token from Harlow's solicitors for his years loyal service! Shop staff are powerless to react to this kind of organised shoplifting. What would be the point of the staff doing anything when no one in authority really cares about this type of crime? The courts consider imprisonment too expensive and it's more economical for our governments to let the insurers payout and to spare the prison service the financial burden of locking these criminals away. It's never going to get better; it's only going to get worse.
