Closure of multi million pound road junction in Harlow due to “legal issue”

News / Wed 14th Aug 2024 at 02:14pm

AS you may recall, the new multi-million pound road junction that connects Cambridge Road with River Way was opened in a blaze of publicity by a number of councils.

But then a few days later, it closed. This time in a blaze of bollards.

We have now received a statement from Essex County Council.

A spokesperson said: “Following the completion of work, a technical legal issue has arisen regarding the transfer of land.

“Unfortunately this has meant that a temporary closure has had to be put in place.

“We are working to reopen the junction as soon as possible, and in the meantime vehicles accessing Templefields can continue to do so via Edinburgh Way”.

Pathetic, they could have turned the traffic lights off as well. The junction should also have allowed a left turn from River way as many are now just doing a u-turn on Cambridge road. Why have the lights phased so that they are red on the entry slip when you could easily turn into River way - it's pointless and causes delays.

Isn’t essex a tory council? Incompetent as usual.

What would the consequences have been of simply ignoring the legal technicality and leaving the road open?

It's amazing how many mistakes local and county council's can make at the tax payers expense with no accountability.

I would not be surprised if the land registry are to blame as the council had to buy the land from the owners of the warehouse in the picture. The land registry is sadly still not up to speed since the pandemic. A relative of mine recently waited nearly 2 years to get a boundary change between 2 pieces of land they owned

Unbelievable after suffering months of traffic congestion trying to get to and from work. What an absolute waste of money and people’s time. On a positive note at least the crater size potholes by the lights have finally been sorted.

Oh my word what a complete failure Harlow is to anything done or being done or to be done. Always not done half done or a complete & utter waste of time & money. Then you wonder why the people of Harlow have no faith Are we really surprised!!! I don't think so.

Complete shambles!!! They did not rush down there with a film crew to explain what a complete waste of money building a useless junction on land they did not technically even own....

Well you could make it up. The land for the, ahem, new hospital hasn't been cleared for development yet the last I heard. Surprised Junction 7A got the green light if land rights is such an issue. Probably main reason why Harlow was built wrong in the first place. When you ever find yourself going round England on quaint country lanes rather than straight roads as on the continent, remember large landowners' rights trump everyone else's. Englishman's home is his castle... when it suits.

They cut down 120 trees destroying a carefully designed bund / embankment / landscaping to hide the industrial estate making a much more pleasant view along the Cambridge road leading into Harlow just to make a second access point / junction to an industrial estate already accessible via Edinburgh way. This cost millions of pounds, the question is why? It should be reinstated back as it was.
