Letter to Editor: All secrets and no debate. Is this Harlow Council’s “new order”?

Dear Editor,

IT began with the departure of most of the Council’s senior officers over the three years the Conservatives have been in charge of the Council. Officers that should provide expertise and advice to Councillors.

It continued on September the 19th with the Conservative Leader of the Council denying an opportunity for the chamber to debate the whopping 180% pay rise he intended to award himself.

It worsened with the Conservatives insisting on a special Council being held in secret last Thursday, with no opportunity for public scrutiny if the important matters to be discussed.

It has become quite sinister now Councillors have received vague legalistic threats of “consequences” should they even express an opinion about the secretive processes that deny residents an opportunity to see how their money is being spent.

Why? Residents have a right to know what is going on. This cloak and dagger approach to running the Council is a cause for grave concern.

Yours

Mark Ingall

Labour Councillor for Bush Fair
