Letter to Editor: Tory-run Harlow Council is all about smoke and mirrors

Politics / Wed 30th Oct 2024 at 08:10am

Dear Editor,

AS many of us have always thought, this Conservative administration is all about smoke and mirrors.

1) For surplus read underspend, money which was set aside to do a job but has not all been spent.

2) Tenants not satisfied with the overall service running at 32.2%

3) Void periods at 21 days when during the period 2010 to 2020 was just 16 days.

4) Regeneraion in the Town Centre includes millions of pounds on new paving, seats and trees. Try asking passers by what they think, I have, they think it is a complete waste of money at a time when the country is skint.

5) It is now 9 months since the claim the council had bought the flats at Burnt Mill. How much income has been lost since then? I wonder if a “few weeks” will take the non-occupation to over a year?

6) As for the Harvey Centre, perhaps someone can point me in the direction of where I can find details of the costs and income recorded in council minutes.

7. The biannual surveys of council tenants for the years 2016 to 2020 showed tenant satisfaction running at 88% compared with the most recent figure of 67.8%.

Lastly, Cllr Swords says he is running the council.

No professionally qualified Chief Executive or Directors in post, it quite simply beggars belief.

I look forward to his clock ticking down to the next election.

Some excellent points and questions here Nicholas. Is it actually legal for a elected Councillor to also be the Head of Paid Service? I guess the more relevant question is - even if it is legal, is it really a good Idea? As you say, Chief executives and Strategic Directors usually are well qualified and have spent many years working in Local Authorities building up their experience. This obviously isn't the case in Dan Swords case. No wonder I am hearing rumours that morale is very low among the paid staff in the council at the moment.

A great letter and Mike also brings the key point of why Councillor Swords is wrong in so many ways. I get Swords approach I do, he's thinking long term in the hope to be the Tory candidate at the next election so along with his emperors new clothes, he seeks to control all of the council, whilst being a councillor. In doing so however he removes a prime accountability safeguard for Harlows resident's. Every council has selected professional and qualified senior officers and executives. Their actions/plans are monitored and residents have a safeguard on their behalf in the form of their representatives, elected councillors. By combining the two, residents lose that enshrined protection and have NO voice in the future of Harlow.

Cllr Swords can't represent his ward, let alone Harlow. He fails to even acknowledge his constituents, let alone the wider district. The epitome of a power crazed, self indulgenct, arrogant career politician. My formal complaint to the ombudsman is pending!

all of the parties are the same, all talk and no action. labour wants to pour money into the NHS to accommodate for more surgeries. Try explaining why pathology has now been sold off to a private company!

It doesn't have to be Halloween to spot something is clearly rotten in the State of Harlow. Three Chief Executive officers leaving in quick succession? What's going on?
