Volunteers Week: “Harlow allotment project gives me purpose”

Events / Sat 7th Jun 2025 at 06:11am

A VOLUNTEER says a community project in Harlow has given her a sense of “purpose”.

Mind in West Essex volunteer Mel helps lead a weekly activity group at an allotment on Thursday afternoons, 1pm-3pm, along with fellow volunteer Rob.

Mel said: “Volunteering is great because it has given me a purpose, [Rob] is very supportive and together we make a great team.

“I feel the allotment is a great place to go to get outside and I would encourage more service users to join in!”

Anyone who wants to help grow fresh produce, learn new skills and connect with others is welcome to sign up for Mind in West Essex’s allotment project.

Everyone is welcome, whether a seasoned gardener or a complete beginner.

Mel said: “In the winter we sit round the fire and stay warm, and the summer is mostly watering the beds and relaxing in the sun!

“Of course, there is always lots of work to do but there is no pressure, I am just happy that people turn up as I understand how hard it can be when you are struggling, and we are here to listen.”

She added: “Also, taking home produce that you have helped to grow is amazing!”
