MP raises concerns over PIP process for Harlow residents with autism

Lifestyle / Wed 25th Jun 2025 at 04:38am

HARLOW MP Chris Vince rose on the floor of the House of Commons over the subject of Personal Independent Payments.

Chris Vince said:

“This morning, I had the pleasure of visiting PACT for Autism, a brilliant local charity in Harlow. It raised concerns about the accessibility of the PIPapplication process for those with autism. As the Department looks to reform the process, could that be considered?

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Liz Kendall replied:

I absolutely will consider that. In fact, I ask my hon. Friend and his constituents to feed into the work that my right hon. Friend the Minister for Social Securityand Disability is doing.

“We have to ensure that it is as easy and effective as possible to access that vital benefit. It is crucial for people with autism, and we want to make it work properly.

But Vince is going to vote with the government to make the rules on PIP tougher, which means 440,000 people will lose benefit. Vince should do the right thing and vote against the cuts. However, Mr Vince's political career comes first.

Autistic people, not people with autism. It's great to see this issue has been raised in Parliament, but hugely disappointing that he is supporting these cuts against a groundswell of MPs who are refusing to.

I think the people should have a referendum.
