Letter to Editor: Former MP Robert Halfon pays tribute to David Devine

Dear Editor
I was really sad to learn of the loss of Harlow historian David Devine. When I was first selected as a Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, way back in 1999, I started to meet David regularly at Harlow Museum, where he would teach me the history of Harlow from Roman times to the present day.

He was a wonderful teacher and a good and kind man. I suspect he will be irreplaceable in terms of his encyclopedic knowledge of Harlow.
I hope Harlow Museum and Harlow Council will remember David in some way, perhaps by naming part of the museum after him. David’s legacy must live on, and Harlow must continue to remember and celebrate our Town’s proud history and heritage.
All kindness to David’s family and friends at this time.
Yours sincerely
Rt Hon Robert Halfon
Former Harlow MP, 2010-2024
I think a realistic brass statue of David in the museum would be a fitting tribute.
Went to school (Stewards) with David, knew him quite well, played with him at his parents house in Copse Hill occasionally. Used to see him in the Hare pub from time to time. A very quiet, polite man. Condolences to his family.
