Excessive speed on M11 puts lives at risk: roads police take action

SPEEDING remains one of the most dangerous behaviours on our roads, and Essex Police is committed to enforcing speed limits to protect all road users.
Late evening, Sunday 6 July, a roads policing officer patrolling the M11 witnessed instances of excessive speeding, with three drivers caught travelling at speeds exceeding 100mph.

One motorist was stopped while driving at 105mph enroute to Rayne—with a 9-year-old child in the back seat. Upon further checks, officers discovered the vehicle’s insurance had expired just one hour earlier, highlighting how speeding can coincide with other serious traffic offences.
Two additional drivers were recorded at speeds of 108mph and 106mph, both well over the national speed limit of 70mph. One of these individuals was driving while disqualified, and their vehicle was seized on the spot. This happened in wet weather conditions, further increasing the risk to themselves and others.
In a separate incident, a taxi driver carrying passengers was stopped for middle lane hogging, a behaviour that disrupts traffic flow and creates unnecessary hazards for other road users.
Roads Policing Sergeant Will Willsher commented:
“Speed limits exist for a reason—they’re not just numbers on signs, they’re there to save lives. Driving at excessive speeds reduces reaction time, increases stopping distances, and increases the severity of collisions, often resulting in serious injury or death.
“Our officers are out on fast roads like the M11 to ensure compliance and take enforcement action where necessary. These recent incidents show how dangerous and irresponsible driving can have serious consequences.
“I’d encourage every driver to always observe speed limits, especially in poor weather conditions, ensure your vehicle is roadworthy and insured and avoid lane misuse by keeping left unless overtaking.”
Essex Police will continue to patrol and enforce speed limits across the county. Let’s work together to make our roads safer for everyone.
I think drug driving is more common and more dangerous. Unfortunately it’s also harder to police, so hey they will stick with the easy targets. It’s funny they never talk about slow drivers. A driver dining 40 when the motorway traffic is doing 70 is just as dangerous as someone speeding. I see more people driving dangerously slow on motorways than I do people speeding.
More slow drivers than speeding drivers really, I think you may be on drugs.
What does a police car look like?... Drivers just do what they like on the M11.
I regularly use our motorway network and while it was possible to speed in the past, since about 2015 it’s almost impossible to drive at 70due to the amount of traffic on the network
We now have cars racing on Fourth Avenue and Elizabeth Way almost every night. People speeding through residential streets at all times of the day, scooters weaving in and out on pavements , E-bikes tearing around two up disregarding all road signs . The police are nowhere (not their fault) and therefore mayhem and carnage blight our roads. Road deaths are increasing every year!
