Chris Vince MP issues statement after fire destroys Harlow bandstand

Chris Vince / Fri 19th Sep 2025 at 07:29am

HARLOW MP Chris Vince has issued a statement after the Harlow Town Park bandstand was destroyed by fire.

Mr Vince said: “It is heartbreaking to hear about the bandstand this morning.

“From watching bands like The Subways to encouraging new talent like Rock School, the bandstand has been a central focus of Harlow’s community for so long.

“Only last month I had the pleasure of attending ECCO festival to celebrate local bands.

“My thanks to the emergency services for all they did last night to tackle the blaze.

“Can I echo the comments made by the leader of the council to stay away from the area and allow them to make the area safe”.

This is gutting. I do hope (but don't really believe) that this was an accident rather than deliberate. So many memories up in smoke. Let's hope we rebuild it in its image - it was an iconic landmark and it, along with the town park, was one of the few truly excellent spaces left in this town. Let's get it done sooner rather than later so it can be open again for events next summer.

Just awful, as Stuart has said, one space that was untouched. Lots of memories for so many. Just sad.

What a shame, let's hope it is rebuilt quickly and if they find the culprit throw the book at them and make them pay for it!

Dear Chris Vince, I'm sure the Fire Brigades Union liked being thanked but would much rather you tackle your government's cuts to the fire service. Only last month they said: "Cuts imposed by central government could equate to the loss of around 2,300 firefighter posts. The news follows yet another below inflation funding settlement for 2025-26." See FBU report at https://www.fbu.org.uk/news/2025/08/21/union-slams-disgraceful-wave-new-cuts-thousands-firefighter-jobs-could-face-axe

Our Bandstand was Harlows national treasure.I am really upset about this desecration.Does everything that brings a little joy have to be destroyed. It was great fun to go over and watch a few bands and kids performing . I hope it's back on its toes for fireworks night.
