Letter to Editor: The Seven Wonders of Harlow

Your Say / Sat 20th Sep 2025 at 09:08am

Dear Editor,

AS a lifelong Harlow resident, I was sad to  hear about Harlow Bandstand burning down.. I am sure it will be rebuilt.

However, it also led me to thinking about the icons that help define Harlow. I had a couple of beers with a friend of mine and we came up with seven wonders of Harlow.

All these help make Harlow unique. They are not all extant, but I believe they are all iconic. So here are our seven.  There may be other candidates. What do you think?

1. Harlow Bandstand

2. The Market Square Clock

3. The Zig Zag Bridge

4. The Gilbeys Gin Building

5. Our Lady of Fatima church

6. The Water Gardens

7. The Obelisk

Regards

Simon Vogel

For me, I'd say 1) the Market Square Clock, 2) the original Town Hall with the observation pod on top, 3) the Water Gardens, 4) The Lawn, 5) the Ski Slope, 6) Gilbeys and 7) Burnt Mill School with the curved roof. I think it's a real shame the Town Hall in particular was demolished, it always looked quite imposing as you drove towards the town centre along Second Ave. Gibberd was right, it was an impressive focal point...

Oh the old Town Hall for sure and I wonder if anyone remembers Benny's Disco in the Stow? Many a happy evening spent there.

Talking of the Market Square clock. Why is it always an hour fast. I thought when the clocks went forward in March, it would show the correct time, but no the clock was put forward an hour. I'm hoping that someone with a bit of 'common sense' (which I know is rare these days) will put the clock back 2 hours in October, showing the correct time.

The jewel in the crown of Harlow is the town park - it's such a wonderful asset.
