Harlow Labour leader calls Reform “bigoted and ignorant” after Pride event comments

THE LEADER of Harlow Labour has called Harlow Reform as “bigoted and ignorant” after they called for Pride events in the town to be “looked into”.
Cllr Griggs was one of the founder members of Harlow and West Essex Pride before leaving to concentrate on leading Harlow Labour.

Councillor James Griggs said: “It hasn’t taken long for Harlow Reform to show their colours and what a dark, miserable set of colours they have proved to be.
Their opposition to the Harvey Centre Pride event on 11th October ably demonstrates their bigotry and ignorance, a perfect reminder of why Pride was born in the first place.
Their claim that it isn’t suitable for children shows just how detached they are from reality.
If they think giving children and adults a safe and fun space to be who they are is a problem they should take a long hard look at themselves. Pride events are an opportunity for all communities, not just LGBTQ+, to come together in a show of love and tolerance, celebrating the rich diversity of our society.
The opportunity to explore your own personality in a safe environment is at the core of every principle of development. I know many people who were aware of their sexuality at a very early age.
“Do Reform seriously suggest people should remain repressed and stifled ‘in the closet’?
Until what age?
“Or do they think it’s never ok to be Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans or anything else other than their outdated stereotype of ‘the norm’?
This sort of outdated bigotry must be challenged and defeated at every turn, and it will be!
“And before they get into the ‘homosexuality is a lifestyle choice’ nonsense I’d invite them to answer me this. When did they decide to be straight?”
Reform's appeal consists of slogans, and apparently easy answers to complex problems; people are taken in. Reform are bigoted and ignorant, they are also a great danger to our well-being.
Yep AB, if people think things are bad now, just wait til Reform get in. We are doomed I tells ya!
Mr George. We are doomed now with this bunch of clowns in.
This proves who the unprofessional trouble makers are when it comes to politics. If anyone who supports any of the right wing parties such as Reform UK or the Conservatives was to make a comment like that about the Labour party and it's supporters & members or any other left wing political party we wouldn't hear the end of it and we would be approached & intimidated by the left wing supporters and members every day whilst out and about in public. This is despicable behaviour and words from someone who is in public service and supposed to be a role model here in Harlow.
Dan, with respect, that's a load of twaddle.
Councillor Griggs has comprehensively answered Reform. The era of 'gay bashing' is thankfully consigned to the dustbin of history. Given patient and thoughtful campaigning so too will Reform UK be a unpleasant memory
If you have a ying then you must have a yang. If someone doesn't agree with you councillor Griggs then they must "be biggotted and ignorant"? to make such a comment gives the impression that you are your own comment does it not? I know a few within the rainbow coalition who are incredibly unhappy with Stonewall since they have turned it into the trans coalition. Are those within the rainbow coalition people biggotted and ignorant now too? When you continue to treat people like an onion with so many layers then you yourselves are the ones being devisive by continually dividing people and communities into seperate groups and then demanding all people should be equal, apart from those you favour councillor griggs who should be just a bit more equal than others. .How about we just treat people as people and stop with all this division nonsense?
Either of the "Established" political party's have had term after term to change, fix or improve, both have failed time and time again, Reform offer a different option which if the opinion polls say the people of the UK would like to see in power, only time will tell if it is the correct one.
Firstly, I have a lot of respect for Cllr.Griggs, but I'm afraid this time he has got totally the wrong end of the stick. He also hasn't read what we said. We asked if it was the best place to hold the event. Which is a perfectly reasonable question. Maybe another venue might be better. Furthermore, if he looked at the end of our comments he will see we wished them well with the event in it's third year. Therefore the insults he has thrown at us in Reform for asking a perfectly reasonable question are both unnecessarily and uncalled for. Perhaps an apology is in order! Mark Gough Reform UK Campaign Manager
Gross comments made by Harlow Reform’s FB page, including: ‘The council-owned Harvey Centre is promoting a so-called “Pride” fun day with face painting and stilt walkers….Pride describes its activities as “promoting visibility and acceptance for diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. Does this seem age appropriate to young children?’ …Showing themselves to be homophobic. What Pride is promoting (visibility, acceptance, and equality) isn’t inappropriate for children; it’s a lesson in respect and kindness. Suggesting that inclusion is somehow unsuitable for young people reveals the prejudice of Reform supporters involved; only thing unsuitable here is dressing intolerance as concern for children.
Well said Jim.
With much respect to Councillor Griggs and Dan Long, once word is missing form this exchange: 'women'. Both sides of the Labour v Reform debate - though I must emphasise, not Cllr Griggs or Dan Long personally -have made appalling statements regarding women, which make me feel like a shocked and estranged outsider looking in on their parties. For example, "Look at business, men are prepared to sacrifice their family lives in order to pursue a career and be successful in a way that fewer women are. And those women that do have probably got more of a chance of reaching the top than the blokes." That is nonsense. I am one of many millions of women who have too often had to put our jobs and careers before our family life. I sympathise with men who have had to do the same.' "Cis...Cis-Gender...Cis supremacy...Cis-normative...women in sport have to up their game" are thrown around statements from the transgender community like self evident confetti. To paraphrase Georgia Meloni, whose politics I do not subscribe to: I am Colleen, I am a woman, I am mother, I am a Christian, I am British: you will NOT take this from me.
Apologies, I shall never learn to text accurately 'Once word is missing' should state, 'one word is missing'. Re: "Look at business, men are prepared to sacrifice their family lives in order to pursue a career and be successful in a way that fewer women are. And those women that do have probably got more of a chance of reaching the top than the blokes." I should have added: by Nigel Farage.
Thank you Councillor Griggs. It's very kind of your to do all of our work for Reform. Please keep up the good work, your a good man. Check out how David Bull is ? We don't do Homophobia. Again a big thank you James
Why do they get so angry when you suggest taking the kids away from the events?? Bit suspicious really
Mitchell, who gets angry? Who suggests taking kids away?
This is really getting concerning. With this and today's announcement by Mr Farage regarding indefinite leave to remain. Reform seem to be keen to label everyone and then isolate and remove those who don't fit with their narrow view of the world. I am glad we live in a country where people are free to be who they want to be and express their opinions openly and honestly. The 1930s showed us what happens when people with narrow and distorted views are allowed any power. I am glad Harlow is having a pride event. I have plenty of friends who are classified as LGBTQIA+ and it makes no difference to me. They are who they are and it shouldn't be up to a budget priced Trump wannabe to determine who someone should live or how they should express themselves
I have my own opinions on Pride.Generally I have observed alot of negative comments when Pride marches are mentioned and I do think that although alot of gay and lesbian people are blamed for all the wrong things that happen in society. The majority of these people are a friendly and intelligent part of our society. We all have our options. We can be tolerant, supportive and caring. Which is what we should strive to be as human beings. Cllr James Griggs is caring, supportive and good value for Harlow . Whatever your choice of sexual partnerships, should not be an excuse for any behaviour that tries to undermine people via the backdoor. Let's be a more kind ,considerate society and a bit more understanding of people . Whether you are female ,male,it is not important. What is important is not to use any excuse to try to score points.
So let's gets this straight reform belive in people's choices of sexual flaours but only two genders. So labour who love muslims from Palestine now as not a country also love this.. Oxyy moron this is pure vote for us as scared of reform
Does anyone else understand what 'Anonymous' was trying to say?
Something about being an oxyy moron
