London Stansted marks Recycle Week with commitment to a greener future

LONDON Stansted is celebrating Recycle Week 2025 by shining a spotlight on its efforts to cut waste, boost recycling, and build a greener future for the airport.

The airport already diverts 100% of its waste from landfill and by 2030, it aims to recycle or reuse 80% of all waste, with the long-term ambition of operating a waste-free airport.

As part of this drive, Stansted will eliminate single-use plastics in its airport lounges by 2027, replacing them with reusable or sustainable alternatives.

These actions form part of MAG’s recently published sustainability strategy, Creating a Sustainable Future for All.

In 2018, Stansted achieved Level 3+ carbon neutral status for emissions under its direct control.
Since 2013, the airport has sourced 100% of its electricity from renewable sources, and construction began this summer on a 14.3MW solar farm to generate clean, on-site power.

Looking ahead, the airport has pledged to reach net zero emissions for its own operations by 2038, while also working with airlines, industry partners, and Government, through the Jet Zero Council, to achieve net zero aviation by 2050.

Martin Churley, MAG’s Head of Environment, said:
“Recycle Week is an important reminder of how everyday actions can make a big difference. At London Stansted, we already recycle most of our waste, but we’re going further, from eliminating single-use plastics in our lounges to working towards a waste-free future.

These commitments sit alongside our wider net zero journey, helping us lead the way in creating a greener airport for passengers, partners, and our community.”
