Harlow Council leader announces ‘major Christmas market’ to light up a renewed Broad Walk this Christmas
General / Fri 10th Oct 2025 at 05:00pm

IN an iconic Love Actually style video, the Leader of Harlow Council, Cllr Dan Swords, has announced that a major Christmas Market will light up the town centre in December.
The town’s festive celebrations will kick off in spectacular style on Saturday 6 December with Light-Up Broad Walk, followed by the launch of the Christmas Market on Saturday 13 December – which will run until Sunday 21 December.

This year’s festivities promise to be bigger and brighter than ever, with the newly renewed Broad Walk taking centre stage. Visitors can expect a dazzling display of lights, glittering Christmas trees, enchanting performances including magical drummers, and a heartwarming community atmosphere as families gather to start celebrating the season.
From 13 to 21 December, Harlow town centre will be transformed into a magical Christmas market bursting with festive cheer. Broad Walk will be lined with traditional wooden cabins twinkling with lights, each offering a charming mix of handcrafted gifts, seasonal treats, and delicious food and drink.
The scent of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, hot chocolate, sizzling German bratwurst and freshly made churros will fill the air, while families can join in creative workshops such as wreath-making, bauble painting, and gingerbread decorating. On weekends, the festivities will grow even livelier, with immersive cabins to explore, enchanting wandering characters, and a programme of live entertainment bringing the spirit of Christmas to life in the heart of Harlow.

Commenting on the announcement, Councillor Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council, said:
“This year, we’re bringing something truly special to Harlow town centre for the festive season. The newly transformed Broad Walk will be the shining heart of our Christmas celebrations – brighter, bolder and more beautiful than ever before. This is a major market with rows of log cabins, specialist food vendors, local gifts and so much more.
“From the spectacular light-up on 6 December to the festive market and family activities, we’re creating a new and magical experience for everyone in Harlow. We want to make Christmas in our town extra special this year, focused on community, joy, and making memories, and we’re proud to be delivering an extravaganza that reflects the ambition and spirit of our town.
“I can’t wait to see families, friends, and visitors getting together to celebrate in our rapidly transforming town centre.
“This is all part of our plan to Build Harlow’s Future and restore pride in our town.”
A little bit of humour never hurts. This does mean the race is on, what will come first, Christmas or Broadwalk paving being finished.
You never know, might even get that planting done outside the Halifax and Body Shop before the spring arrives. Been working on that all year! Well I say working....
lots of people in particular the elderly are wanting to know if there will be any new seats installed once paving is finished
Will the seats and paving be finished before this tho 🤔, and this all sounds soo big and spectacular but who’s paying for it is everyone’s council tax gonna get a huge hike to pay for it
Amazing how this announcement comes a couple of days after the Redstone/Endeavour house argument and Dan Swords is still yet to provide the letter in full from the Government, respond publicly to the BBC news report about the way he has handled the issue. This is clearly a "look over here", trying to distract residents attention. I do not have an memory span of a goldfish. A "Christmas Market" does not detract from the fact Dan Swords has failed to be transparent with communication sent and received about Redstone/Endeavour house and has lost all integrity by accusing Chris Vince MP of getting his Government to write a letter after the event, which is not true to "save his blushes". I'm not sure some Turkey or Tinsel will save Dan Swords if he doesn't respond appropriately.
Would have been better to have the real Market Square for the Christmas Market. I never see any work being carried out there, just piles of building materials, a few trucks & hardly anyone on site save someone sitting around all day. Its an absolute disgrace for this area to be left for so long. Come on Dan, just get it done!! BTW, please reduce the amount of repeated ads on YH
I'm sure this has the potential to be lovely, but what a shame a market isn't going into the actual "market square". Are these wooden shacks going into storage after Xmas, or will they be a part of Broad Walk all year?
A Christmas Market on Market Square would be nice. Make sure the whole place is lit up so no one trips up over building sites.
Lets hope no-one trips over the paving slabs which are already showing signs of subsidence, indeed at least two have already cracked in half and dozens are chipped. Don't forget this is costing almost £7 million to "transform" Broadwalk and Market Square and has already taken 11 months to get as far as it has.
Sounds like a load of old Scrooge's have got lose. Instead of moaning about it why not just come along and enjoy the Christmas market, I've seen this market before, it's very good and will help those who enjoy Christmas to get in the Christmas spirit, well unless your names Labour Scrooge.
Great, Am all for it, but can we build ALL COMUNITIES around ALL festivities, be it ROSH ASHANA,DIWALI, CHRISTMAS, AND MANY MORE.... please, unite, NOT divide.
Let's wait until after the event to moan about it although I must say it sounds like it could be good for harlow something we desperately need
Why can't a market be a permanent fixture in the town, everyone loves a market, its the people's town let the people decide, it used to be the backbone of the town back in the day.
You do not have to look far to see how successful a market can be, Epping on a Monday is packed with people who go along on Market day. The one at Hoddesdon, although small also adds to footfall.
Sounds brilliant Dan 😊🎄🎁
What sort of stalls will they be i bet anything you like at 75%will be foriegn rubbish
Sounds like this will be great looking forward to visiting with friends
why did harlows market in that market square really close if it had been very popular?
Derek Clark. Totally agree with you. Some of the post are pleased this is happening , but the others are all moaning and won't be happy until something goes wrong. They lead sad lives.
