Close to 200 garages across Harlow set to be sold off
News / Mon 13th Oct 2025 at 09:34am

NEARLY two hundred garages in Harlow are set to be sold off across the town.
The recommendation was made at a cabinet meeting at Harlow Council.
The cabinet heard that in many areas there were less that 50% occupancy rate.
Film of the agenda item is below.
The list of garages are also below.

As garage rents massively increased, the council declined to maintain their infrastructure. We were forced to get rid of our garage and reluctantly pave our front garden. So another bit of green was lost. This is being replicated across the town, and is a deliberate action of the council to dispose of garages.
Transparency and consultation sadly lacking, which was conceded, Portfolio holder proposing sale also conceded not all sites had been visited. No details regarding prospective buyer provided in any public documentation or discussed at cabinet meeting. Looks like back of fag packet project. Surely much work still to do. What I have identified above is available in the clip.
Garage Rents in this town are ridiculous which is why people don't rent them, what is going to happen to the garages? Will they be upgraded maybe with lights for safety as some are very dark or knocked down for parking?
The council informed residents and garage tenants by letter of this proposal rather than consult with them and in respect of at least one site gave them just 9 days in which to seek further information. The letter said that the report to the committee, which was over a month after the letters were sent would not be available for public view until AFTER the meeting had taken place. It does beg the question as to how an investor (the councils words) thinks they can make a profit when the council does not. As to how and which investor has been chosen, well once again this decision has been made behind closed doors.
Of course Harlow Council did a consultation on this. They posted the consultation documents very clearly, in a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Leopard"!
67 of the garages are in Mark Hall ward, this area has been singled out for “RED Zone parking” This means vehicles must comply with the Highway Code and not park on bends and junctions. Harlow Council has recently passed a law prohibiting parking on grass that the council mow, in addition the Civil Servant authorities want to increase the size of the bus stop parking space taking up more resident's parking space. Within the Mark Hall ward I would estimate there will be 50 to 100 vehicles that already breach the proposed dictate from the Councils, Harlow and Essex. As to the under use of any of the garages, vacant garages are never advertised locally, only at the Civic Centre. Honestly, how many Harlow residents would go into the civic centre? The design of the garages were built for the cars that were around at the time of building, not today's cars which would struggle to fit into them. A redesign, rebuild and advertising locally combined with lighting and security and a lower price is all that would be needed. I can see developers moving in to build more tower blocks on the horizon, with more parking problems.
how much was it to rent out a council garage?
Smug and self centred. Clear the chambers if there is something not for the public's ears. Secret society. The chances are that the sites have already been sold.
It is a puzzlement for sure. Why if the council was short of cash (short sales are a good sign of this), were they buying Adams House, Terminus House and the star properties to name a few? "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" said Marcellus in Hamlet, or was it the residents of Harlow?
Anita they are approximately 16.50 a week for private rent less if you're a council tenant
I had a garage in Harlow but it was stolen. Disgraceful. Please be on the look out.
Modern Cars don't fit 1960s Garages......most i see are used as storage.
Let's hope they become cheap parking bays with lockable posts. Because if they decide to build flats , that will be more parking on the roads, which cannot take anymore vehicles, just go around Ladyshot and see the parking problem. And that's the same with the rest of the town.
If the council flatten the ground and open the space up for parking this will be good., we have area's throughout harlow were it's impossible to park, if they sell the land off for more properties the parking issue's in our town will only get worse.where I live we have a block of 12 only a few are used for cars, mostly used for storage,.it's about time our council actually used their brain to solve problems of parking not making them worse,My mum used a saying , which applies to harlow council and parking issue's , it was " if they didn't have bad idea's, they would have no idea's " Come on council think about parking.
