Harlow Council set to launch programme to renew neighbourhood centre car parks
Business / Thu 13th Nov 2025 at 08:24am
AS part of its mission to ‘renew our neighbourhoods’, Harlow Council is set to launch a programme of improvements to neighbourhood car parks across the town. Following a full audit of car parks near shopping centres, community hubs, playgrounds, and visitor attractions, the programme aims to create safer, more attractive, and accessible parking areas for residents.

Improvements will include enhanced surfaces, better lighting, CCTV, updated layouts, and clearer signage, ensuring car parks are easier to use, better maintained, and welcoming for all.
While many councils across the UK have increased parking charges, Harlow Council continues to offer free one-hour parking and very low charges thereafter, making parking practical and affordable for residents and local businesses alike.
Commenting on the programme, Cllr Nicky Purse, Cabinet Member for Environment, said:
“We know that well-maintained, safe, and accessible car parks make a real difference to our neighbourhoods. This programme will not only improve the look and safety of our parking areas but also make them easier for residents to use.
“By keeping the first hour free and parking charges low, we are ensuring these improvements are practical and affordable for everyone. This is part of our work to renew our neighbourhoods as we Build Harlow’s Future.”
well done Harlow Council. it's good they are keeping the hour free if the car parks were under Essex highway the charges would go up and we would lose that hour free. l would only say now they have updated the new machines it would have been nise to have notice on it saying touch screen in the instructions for the older people who don't use smart phones 😉🤔
Please finish one job before you start the next. It's Al nightmare to get round anywhere in Harlow at the moment.
And still park on yellow lines on a bend at stow when free one hour parking 100 yards away just to lazy to walk and then get upset when they get a parking fine madness.
Cutting car parking space at the back old post office hum
The council should be holding an inquiry into the fiasco regarding the road works at the junction of Edinburgh way and fifth avenue, the amount of money spent on this junction and we still only have one lane in and one lane out, even when these clowns finally finish we will still be left with all the congestion
While i applaud keeping the first hour as free, parking and traffic flow needs a serious review. Getting off the top deck of the Water Gardens took nearly an hour a few weeks ago and this will only get worse as we approach Christmas. Getting across the town in rush hour is a major feat in itself - weren't the roadworks to be completed by "Autumn 2025"? As for parking at the hospital there are too few spaces so how many appointments are missed as a result and how do they justify £3.50 for the first hour - not everyone is able to park in the Harvey Centre and walk to the hospital / Addison House as i have been told to do by PALS and the surgery. The Council keeps putting up blocks of flats etc but where is the supporting infrastructure like parking, surgeries etc. - let alone the fiascos of Redstone House, Terminous House and the Rank Hovis office block converted to flats (no thought to parking or the local surgery) and then closed due to issues The Town centre used to have such a wide spectrum of shops but now seems to be dying on its feet At this rate Harlow will be overloaded very very soon
Brenda. It's very difficult to park in the designated parking area , as all the building site workers are parked in it.
Tip231, Be careful, if it's taken you an hour to get out of the carpark you only get I think 15 mins after you've scanned your ticket and the anpr camera is just before the exit, you may find you could get pcn through the post......just saying.
There's alot of negatively on here, whilst I'm the first to complain about both harlow council and essex County Council cut them some slack, there's no gain without pain, people are too quick to moan about lack of improvement but when the work starts you still moan, the long term roadworks around the town centre are a pain in the arse but it's a long drawn out process, you have to think about what the long term benefits are.
