HARLOW Council has appointed Greenford Ltd to turn the derelict Canons Gate Allotment into a new Community Orchard. Work on site will begin in the coming weeks.
The works will restore pride to the area and transform a derelict allotment into a new community resource which can be enjoyed by residents.

This project is part of the council’s mission to “renew our neighbourhoods” as it builds Harlow’s future.
Councillor Nicky Purse, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment & Sustainability, said:
“Appointing a contractor marks a really positive milestone in bringing the Canons Gate Community Orchard to life. This project is about more than planting trees it’s about restoring pride in the area, creating a shared community space, and transforming a site that has stood derelict for far too long.

“Work will begin shortly, with tree planting planned for the spring, and I’m delighted that this former allotment site will soon become a welcoming, green asset for residents to enjoy for years to come.”
Why?.....Why an orchard? Why not allotments ? There is a massive waiting list across the town. The only problem I could see would be access and parking, as the site is on a bus route. The previous tenant managed to secure large quantises of free compost
This plan for an orchard was announced in the pages of YourHarlow on December 9, 2024. I know councils don't move fast, but 13 months to get to the stage of just appointing the contractor is taking the biscuit. Nicola Purse needs to set in stone a completion date. No more waffle. Not just the start announced in December 2024, but we a YourHarlow news story in October last year that said: "Change of use permissions have been secured, and the procurement process to appoint a suitable contractor is currently underway. This process is expected to conclude by the end of October 2025. Subject to the successful appointment of a contractor, preparatory works are programmed to commence in December 2025." Both these milestones have been missed. Watch this space for snails paced progress. This Canons Gate allotment saga is a disgrace and the buck stops with portfolio holder councillor Nicky Purse. Who wants a orchard Surly having an allotment and help feeding the community is the best way to go
I wonder if apples, pears and cherries can feed people?
