Safety measures installed at stations in East Anglia to deter trespassers

News / Wed 17th Jun 2026 at 11:42am

GREATER Anglia has installed new anti-trespass measures at railway stations across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

The measures, including additional fencing, gates and rubber surface deterrents known as witches’ hats, have been installed to help keep people away from the railway and reduce the risk of trespass.

Witches’ hats are rubber spikes installed on the ground to deter people from accessing the track.

Anti-trespass measures have been installed at Attleborough, Brandon, Chelmsford, Cromer, Diss, Eccles Road, Gunton, Harling Road, Hatfield Peverel, Lakenheath, Manea, March, Roughton Road, Shippea Hill, Spooner Row, St Margarets, Stowmarket, Thetford, Trimley, West Runton, Whittlesea and Wymondham.

Work started in January 2026 and was completed in late spring.

Completion of the project coincides with Rail Safety Week, an industry-wide and industry-led initiative focusing on rail safety for all.

Matt Wakefield, Greater Anglia’s Safety, Security & Sustainability Director, said:

“Safety is our top priority on the railway, and these measures are designed to help keep people off the tracks and away from danger.

“The railway is not a playground. Anyone who goes on the tracks without permission is putting their life, and the lives of others, at serious risk.

“If you see someone on the tracks, please alert a member of rail staff immediately or dial 999 in an emergency.”

Greater Anglia also works with Samaritans, which provides training to rail staff across the industry.

Greater Anglia colleagues have taken part in training that shows rail staff how to recognise someone who may be vulnerable, how to approach them and how to start a conversation.

They are taught essential listening skills that underpin Samaritans’ volunteer services, as well as how to help someone to a place of safety and refer them to friends, family, British Transport Police or Samaritans for further support.

Samaritans can be contacted free on 116 123, day or night.

The safety measures are part of Greater Anglia’s ongoing work to keep passengers, colleagues and the public safe on and around the railway.

They also reflect the wider approach now being taken across GBR Anglia, with c2c, Greater Anglia and Network Rail Anglia working more closely together under one leadership team to improve planning, strengthen day-to-day coordination and support a safer, more joined-up railway for passengers and colleagues.
