Ambitious plans for market expansion into Broad Walk in Harlow

Politics / Fri 17th Oct 2014 at 05:24pm

HARLOW Council is proposing to expand the market into Broad Walk as part of plans to improve the viability of the town’s market and the town centre.

The plans unveiled yesterday (16 October 2014) in a report by the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Regeneration & Enterprise* could see the following trialled from November 2014 for six months:

The existing market in Market Square expanded into the north end of Broad Walk** (subject to licensing approval). This will create room for approximately 16 traditional market pitches which will be available to existing traders first.

To encourage more pitches, the free trading period for new market traders be extended from six trading days to three months.

The market will operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and not operate on a Thursday due to this day having a low number of traders.

The Council has also agreed to help set up a seven-day-a-week Christmas market in the north end of Broad Walk between November and December 2014.

Councillor Tony Durcan, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration & Enterprise, said: “The market has been in Harlow for over 58 years and is an important part of our town centre. There is a perception that the Council doesn’t support the market; this couldn’t be further from the truth.

“We have been working hard to look at how we can improve the market and the choice for residents and help make it a more viable business for traders. The proposed plans will give the Council a chance to try some new things and then review what has worked as options for the future of the market are explored. A vibrant market expanded in a busier part of the town centre could be just what the town and the town centre needs.”

The Council will be meeting existing market traders over the coming two weeks’ to explain the plans in full and how it will work.

Now that the Council has agreed the expansion, the statutory licensing approval process has started for street trading at the north end of Broad Walk. This will include a two-week public consultation. If approved the plans can be put into place.
