Dear Chancellor

“I welcome the recommendation by the Board of Public Health England to create a national science hub in Harlow, something that is strongly supported by Harlow Council, and would urge that the Treasury endorses the recommendation. Harlow is, and has always been, a science-led town, we are after all the birthplace of fibre optic communications recognised by the award of the Nobel Prize for Physics to Sir Charles Kao for his work in Harlow. The move by Public Health England will add to that status and it will increase the number of high quality science and research jobs in the town, and will be a major component in supporting much needed regeneration in Harlow.

“Harlow is the perfect location for the new science hub. There is an ideal location in the ex-Glaxo Smith Kline campus, we are at the heart of the London, Stansted, Cambridge corridor – already a hub for life sciences, and it is a great place to live for employees. A new Science Hub links perfectly with our enterprise zone and the MedTech centre, it will increase the attractiveness of the town for businesses in the science and health sector, and will provide added impetus to the economy in Harlow, and the East of England more generally. We want the world’s best scientists and researchers to work here in Harlow but we also want to improve the higher education offer in the town and the educational opportunities for local people. Having a state-of-the–art science hub in Harlow will help to do just that.

While other investment is also required in Harlow, most notably in a new junction on the M11 and a northern bypass, as well as dual tracking the London Stansted rail link, this would be an excellent first step. I call on you to support the recommendation for Public Health England to create a new science hub in Harlow.
