Football Christmas truce to be remembered at North Weald

Lifestyle / Sun 30th Nov 2014 at 11:23am

Christmas TruceSHOOTERS Football in North Weald are running a Remembrance Tournament for veterans aged 30+ on Thursday 11th December as part of a week of activity called ‘Football Remembers’, which commemorates the centenary of the 1914 Christmas Truce.

One of the most iconic moments of the First World War is being marked across all levels of football in a joint collaboration between The FA, the Premier League, the Football League and the British Council. The week will run from Friday 5th to Sunday 14th December with the aim of engaging football fans and players with what took place on Christmas Day one hundred years ago on the battlefields in Belgium.

On 25th December 1914, soldiers from both sides put down their weapons and crossed into ‘no man’s land’ to share in an impromptu ceasefire. First-hand accounts from the time include references to football being played, and photographs being taken. All photos uploaded to social media using #FootballRemembers will be automatically uploaded to a special website – www.footballremembers.com.

Football Remembers kicked off in May when the four partners launched a Football Remembers education pack which was sent to more than 30,000 schools across the UK. It includes resources to help children learn about the Truce – including eyewitness accounts, photos, drawings and letters from soldiers, some of which have never been published before. A template press release is also available for schools to publicise special matches they’re arranging.

Shooters’ tournament starts at 7:30pm. The entry fee is £40 per team, and all the money raised will go to the Help for Heroes charity. There will be medals for the winners and runners-up and the night will include a raffle, featuring various prizes. To register a team, call (01992) 524393 or E-Mail [email protected]. The template press release for schools can be found at www.essexfa.com.

How Football Remembers Will Work

o For all matches taking place from 5th-14th December, all players involved will pose together in a mixed group photograph as a mark of respect to those on both sides who took part in the 1914 Christmas Truce. Each home team should nominate someone to take the photo.

o Fans, teams and schools will be asked to upload their pre-match pictures via social media over the course of Football Remembers Week. Any match of any size can be uploaded, from school to Sunday league fixtures, five-a-side matches to kickabouts in the back garden.

o Those posting photos to social media should use #FootballRemembers to ensure it is uploaded to the special footballremembers.com website. Any other information is welcome.
