Athletics: Mud, Park Runs and Vikings!

HARLOW Running Club competed in the third race of four in the East Herts and West Essex Cross Country League over a muddy 4.5 mile course at Saffron Walden.

In the Ladies race Julia Gardiner finished in an excellent 3rd place out of 75 finishers and 1st Vet 35. She was followed home by Sharon Wright 15th, Vicky Steadman 20th, Janice Page 28th, Debbie Barry 38th, Karen Moir 41st, Holly Nairn 42nd, Michelle Aitken 46th, Louise Kedge 50th, Debbie Smith 51st and Jane Evans 52nd.

In the Mens race Rob Lowe finished in a superb 7th place out of 114 finishers and 1st Vet 40. He was followed by Jamie Jephcott 18th, Peter Brewin 19th, Darren Coates 45th, Andy Terrell 47th, Adrian Fell 54th, John Bull 60th, Brendon Maclean 62nd, Pasquale Pellecchia 65th and 1st Vet 60, Andy Ramage 67th, Sean Flynn 69th, John Tennant 70th and 2nd Vet 60, Alan Cootes 74th and 3rd Vet 60, Graham Saville 79th, Martin McColgan 84th, Richard Smith 89th, Robin Lozeau 96th and Ron Newton 104th.

The Ladies Team winners on the day were Ware Joggers with Hoddesdon Tri Club 2nd, Bishops Stortford RC 3rd, Harlow RC 4th and Saffron Walden Striders 5th. The Men’s Team winners were Hoddesdon Tri with Ware Joggers 2nd, Bishops Stortford RC 3rd, Saffron Walden Striders 4th and Harlow RC 5th. Overall on the day winners were Ware Joggers with Hoddesdon Tri 2nd, Bishop’s Stortford RC 3rd, Saffron Walden Striders 4th and Harlow RC 4th. After three races Ware Joggers lead the league with 15 points followed by Bishop’s Stortford RC 11 pts, Hoddesdon Tri 9 pts, Harlow RC 5pts and Saffron Walden Striders 5 pts.

Meanwhile once again prolific runner Andy Kinney completed another double marathon weekend, finishing the Viking Coastal Winter Marathon Days 1 and 2, run partly on a sea defence wall at Birchington near Margate. Kinney finished the first day in 80th place out of 104 finishers in 5hrs 05min 07sec and the second day in 66th place out of 95 finishers in 5hes 04min 48sec.

At the Gunpowder Parkrun 5K at Waltham Abbey 70 year young Jim Bates once again ran a personal best time for the distance (PB) and improved the HRC Vet 70 record by finishing in 33rd place out of 107 finishers and 1st Vet 70 in a fantastic 24min 10sec. John Bull was first Harlow finisher in 19th place in 22min 15sec followed by Robin Lozeau 26th in 23min 39sec, Graham Saville 27th in 23min 46sec, Alan Wellbelove 70th in 27min 56sec (PB) and Richard Smith 91st in 32min 01sec.

At the Harlow Parkrun 5K Frank Pardoe finished in 14th place out of 134 finishers in 22min 52sec and he was followed home by Paul Dixon 24th in 24min 44sec, Michelle Aitken 49th in 28min 11sec and Pushpa Mistry 77th in 31min 51sec.

At the Great Notley Parkrun 5K at Braintree Jamie Jephcott finished in 3rd place out of 86 finishers in an excellent 19min 41sec.

At the Bedfont Lakes Parkrun 5K near Ashford, Middlesex, Richard Solomons finished in 14th place out of 149 finishers and 1st Vet 60 in a superb 22min 21sec.

At the Panshanger Parkrun 5K at Hertford Sean Flynn finished in 55th place out of 240 finishers in 23min 58sec.
