Local historian to present lecture on “Story Behind Three Gravestones”

Lifestyle / Tue 10th Feb 2015 at 06:17pm

THE SAD DISCOVERY in a Harlow cemetery of the names of three young men from one family, who had perished while serving their country in the First World War, sparked curiosity in staff at the Museum of Harlow who delved into the story of the whole family.

One of the investigators was David Devine, former museum archivist, and he will tell the story, with family photographs and facts, of the Riley family of Burnt Mill village.

The village was demolished in the early 1960s to make way for Harlow Town station.

Father of the Riley family was Burnt Mill’s postmaster for many years, and, following the museum investigation, descendants and neighbours of the Rileys came forward to add to the story.

This is a slice of Harlow’s social history at its best, taking us back to the days of 1914 – 1918 when so many families lost sons, husbands, brothers and lovers.

Lectures: £4 for visitors,
£2 for members.
