THE region’s ambulance service has urged people to be prepared and take care to avoid a medical emergency this August bank holiday.

Officials from the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) are gearing up for the long weekend by reminding people to take simple steps to stay safe.

The Trust received 10,406 emergency calls during the 2014 August bank holiday (22nd to 25th August) and responded to 8,164 of those.

Marcus Bailey, Consultant Paramedic, said: “We are prepared for the bank holiday weekend, but would urge people to take steps to avoid a call to the ambulance service.

“When people are out and about this weekend, remember to keep hydrated and cover up if you are out in the sun and ensure your first aid kit is up to date with over-the-counter pain killers, after-sun, plasters, and antihistamines.”

“We would also like to remind people about alternatives to 999 if they have minor ailments by calling the non-emergency 111 helpline, visiting an out-of-hours GP, walk-in centre or pharmacy.”

People are also being urged to remember:

To wear sun cream – you can burn even if it is a cloudy day.
Only go swimming in open water that is supervised by lifeguards and don’t go out of your depth.
Be prepared for changes in the weather.
Please keep your distance from the car in front when driving.

If you are lighting up a barbecue this weekend, make sure it is on level ground and away from fences, sheds and overhanging trees. Never light a barbecue in an enclosed place and never pour petrol, meths or other accelerants on to a barbecue.
