BERGEN-Belsen concentration camp was liberated 71 years ago on April 15th 1945 by the 11th Armoured Division of the British Army.
This was a hugely significant moment and perhaps the first time that the British public began to understand the true horrors of the Holocaust.
Robert Halfon MP:
“Some of my family were in Bergen-Belsen.
My family owes a huge debt to Britain and the Great British Armed Forces who liberated the concentration camp and I will never forget it.”
Last year marked 70 years since the end of the Second World War and the liberation of the camps.
The Holocaust Educational Trust led a delegation of over 200 students, teachers, members of the royal family, ambassadors and supporters to join international commemorations at Bergen-Belsen.
It is estimated that at least 52,000 people died at Bergen-Belsen before it was liberated.
