Two new projects to encourage women into sport

TWO new projects developed by local sports ambassadors have been set up to help encourage women to participate regularly in sport and physical activity.

Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign has contributed to getting 1.6 million more women participating in regular sport and physical activity. Active Harlow and Active Essex have recruited This Girl Can Essex Ambassadors to encourage more local women to jump on the bandwagon and become physically active. The ambassadors have been developing projects that aim to meet the needs of local women and new projects are about to launch.

The first project to launch is Walking Netball which has been developed by Kelly Harman in partnership with Pat O’Mara, the local netball community and England Netball. Sessions starts Thursday 20 April 11am to 12 noon at Mark Hall Sports Centre. The first session is free and it will be £2 after that. No experience is necessary but if you like Netball you’ll love walking netball. Inspired by the popularity of walking football and walking rugby Walking Netball is just like Netball but slower! It is designed so anyone can play regardless of fitness, ability or age.

The next This Girl Can project to launch in Harlow has been developed by Lesley Whitaker Dance and aims to get mothers and babies/toddlers dancing. Mothers are being encouraged to bring their baby or toddler to the Learning Centre at Pet’s Corner for a fun and enjoyable experience of gentle movement and dancing. There is an opportunity to visit Pet’s Corner or the Town Park afterwards. The sessions start on Monday 24 April 10.30am to 11.30am and cost £3.50.

Both projects have been funded by Active Essex. For more information about This Girl Can in Essex visit the This Girl Can Essex Facebook page or follow @activeharlow on Twitter.
