THE Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust is raising awareness about heart failure alongside the European-wide initiative, Heart Failure Awareness Day, on Friday 5 May 2017.

The heart failure service at PAH has seen an increase in demand over the last two years and has expanded as a result.

Kevin Beharry Paray, Clinical Nurse Specialist, said: “Heart failure is when the heart is unable to pump blood around the body properly, and this can happen for a number of different reasons. Our aim is to help people to recognise the symptoms, understand the importance of an early and accurate diagnosis and the different kinds of treatment available to them. We want people to have the knowledge to feel empowered about their health and have confidence in their care.”

On the day there will be a range of awareness activities across the Trust such as: information stands where specialists will be educating members of the public and a special new menu is being launched at our restaurant. Our patient panel volunteers and staff will be handing out 700 apples, which have kindly been donated by Adrian Scripps Ltd, to staff, patients and visitors.

Essex & Herts Air Ambulance will also be supporting the Trust on the day. As a service that provides immediate care to some heart failure patients they want to help people to identify the symptoms as soon as possible.

Clair Mitchell, Essex Fundraising Coordinator for Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, said: “It might surprise people that our most common call-outs are to instances of cardiac-related conditions. Forty five per cent of our Charity’s call-outs last year were for medical incidents, with most of these being cardiac arrest across a variety of ages. We’re very proud to be raising awareness for such an important cause alongside the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust.”
