FIRE safety in the home: have you registered your electrical appliances?

Harlow Council is encouraging residents to register their electrical appliances.

In 2016 figures were released which revealed that one fire a day in London involved white goods such as dishwashers, washing machines, tumble driers, fridges and freezers. In 90 per cent of the cases, the cause was a fault in the appliance or its electrical supply.

If you haven’t registered your appliance you can register them with services such as www.registermyappliance.org.uk so you can be notified of faults and recalls from manufacturers.

You can also check whether any appliances have been reported as faulty at www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk

Residents are also being encouraged to:

· Check that their electrical products have the European safety standards ‘CE mark’ on them.

· If an appliance has a known issue contact the manufacturer to arrange repair/replacement. Do not leave it unattended when in use (including overnight) and unplug it when not in use.

· Always use the manufacturer’s dedicated charger.

· Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on charging. Many appliances can overheat if left for too long.

· Unplug chargers from their socket when not in use.

· Keep to one plug per socket whenever possible.

· Make sure that when using an adapter it is a fused ‘in-line’ type, not an in-wall multi-plug.

· Check the power limit of adapters and do not exceed it.

· Always fully unwind cable drum extension leads, if safe to do so, to prevent overheating.

Balconies have also been a source of serious fires due to hazards ranging from discarded cigarettes to heaters and barbecues.
