Young Trailblazers win accolade at TeenTech Awards

TWO of Passmores Academy’s brightest young innovators, Mollie Smith and Abbie Morris (Year 10), represented Passmores at the TeenTech Awards at the Royal Society of Science in London at the end of June. The girls presented their ground breaking design, MasquerAID, which resolves the issue of medical masks being a barrier to communication. Their unique design was one of fifty projects shown at the Awards and was selected from a mammoth two thousand entries submitted by young people from across the country.

On the day, the girls’ work was assessed by a panel of distinguished judges and viewed by esteemed celebrity guests Dr Brian Cox, Dr Christian Jessen, and co-founder and CEO of TeenTech, Maggie Philbin. Mollie said, ‘We were able to look at other people’s projects, which were all so different and it was really inspiring’. Thanks to the girls’ hard work, Passmores has been awarded Centre of Innovation and Creativity Silver status.

Abbie explained the design was inspired by research which showed patients can sometimes feel intimidated by doctors wearing medical masks. The MasquerAID mask is made of the same see-through material used for contact lenses and helps resolve this issue, whilst still preventing the spread of infection. Mollie said she and Abbie have always enjoyed creating things together, and the project is the culmination of one year’s work carried out in their own time after school. This is the second time they had been selected to attend the awards. Abbie said, ‘It wasn’t as nerve wracking as last year as we knew what to expect, but as we started to set up our stall, the nerves started to kick in! Once we had done a practise presentation, it boosted our confidence massively’.

Miss Natalie Radmore, who accompanied the girls at the event said, ‘The girls loved it. It was really nice to see how they developed their project and the passion they had for it.’
The project will be demonstrated at the forthcoming TEDx Youth event to be held at Passmores on 15th July, and will show how TeenTech inspires creativity and innovation in science, technology, engineering and maths.
Congratulations to Abbie and Mollie, innovators of the future.
