Rooftop stand-off ends as woman placed in police custody

Further police statement

Officers were called shortly after 2.30am today, Thursday, July 27, with concerns for the welfare of a woman.

A woman had climbed onto a roof of a property in Markwell Wood, Harlow and was reported to be throwing roof tiles on to the street and cars below.

Negotiators were brought on scene and managed to bring her down from the roof at around 10.20am.

A 31-year-old woman from Harlow has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and possession of drugs and remains in police custody.
District Commander Matt Cornish said, “We treated this incident as a priority and were swiftly on scene after we received the initial call.

Three negotiators were present who talked to the woman and safely brought her down.

“The residents of the street were extremely cooperative while the cordon was in place and very kindly assisted us with clearing the tiles from the road. We would like to thank them for their support during the incident.”

1115 hrs

Now the big cleans up begins. The roofs of two houses are badly damaged. A number of cars have been vandalised and the road is strewn with debris.

1100 hrs

Essex Police statement: “Negotiators have ensured the safety of the woman in Markwell Wood and the incident has now been resolved.

“A 31-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

Number of residents who live in Markwell Road still unable to get out of street.

Local sources report that a woman was in a highly agitated state on street in early hours of morning.

Any attempts to interact are met with a stream of bad language

Two plain clothed negotiators are continuing to engage but the lady doesn’t seem to be interested. Has thrown slates at them

A woman is still on top of the roof,the street is trewn with debris as she throws slates off the roof.

There are fifteen emergency service vehicles at the scene.

A woman is perched on top of a roof, all emergency services at the scene.

ESSEX Police are currently at the scene of an incident at the T-junction of Markwell Wood, Harlow.

Officers are concerned for the welfare of a woman and a negotiator is present.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from the area at this time.
