Harlow Theatre Company are busy putting the finishing touches to their final production of 2017, Noel Coward’s ‘Blithe Spirit’.

BLITHE Spirit is set at the house of well-to-do, socialite and writer, Charles Condomine, and his wife, Ruth. One evening, Charles invites local eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, to hold a seance at his house. He also asks along his friends, Dr. and Mrs. Bradman, intending to gather character inspiration from Madame Arcati for his latest book.

Initially, all involved think that the seance has been a failure, but it soon becomes clear that Madame Arcati has indeed been successful and has brought a ghostly presence into the house.

The resulting havoc which ensues is highly entertaining as Charles’s position and relationship with Ruth are well and truly put to the test.

Blithe Spirit is being directed by Leo Appleton, who is making his directorial debut for Harlow Theatre Company with this production. Leo joined HTC for their 2015 production of Rent, having recently moved to the area from Liverpool. Whilst Blithe Spirit is the first production he has directed for HTC, he brings with him lots of performance and directing experience from the many Theatre companies he worked with in Merseyside previously. He has directed and produced many pantomimes, plays, musicals and youth shows over the years but is now very much looking forward to bringing his experience into this production of Blithe Spirit.

Of the play and the company Leo recently commented ‘I am very pleased and proud to have been asked to direct for HTC. I’ve been involved in performing in four productions since I joined, but my real passion is directing and Blithe Spirit is such a wonderful play to be making my debut with. Most people will be familiar with this Noel Coward classic, either through the 1945 film, featuring Rex Harrison and Margaret Rutherford, or through seeing other productions as it is indeed a very popular choice. However it hasn’t been performed at Victoria Theatre Hall before so I am delighted to haven been asked to bring it to life for our Harlow audiences. I have an amazing cast working very hard on the fabulously, sophisticated characters in the script. I am very lucky to have such high quality performers. Similarly, as it is a very technically demanding play, we need a very flexible set and lots of talented crew members are busy designing and building this so that the end result will be a true spectacle’

Intensely funny and character-driven, Blithe Spirit combines farce, emotion, and wit to great effect. It is being performed at Victoria Hall Theatre at 20:00 each evening from Wednesday 22nd to Saturday 25th November and tickets can be purchased online.
