News / Sat 25th Nov 2017 at 10:57am

Update: 1630 hrs

The M11 northbound in Essex is closed between junction 8 (near Stansted Airport) and junction 9 (near Newmarket), due to an incident involving an overturned heavy goods vehicle which is blocking the carriageway and which has spilt a significant volume of fuel.

A diversion route is in place:

Exit the motorway at junction 8 and follow the solid black circle diversion symbol. Take the 2nd exit at the roundabout to join the A120 westbound towards Little Hadham. Continue on the A120 though Little Hadham, towards Standon. At the next roundabout after Standon, take the 3rd exit to join the A10 northbound towards Buntingford. Continue along the A10 northbound passing through Buntingford and on towards Royston. At Royston, take the 3rd exit and join the A505 eastbound towards Duxford, to then re-join the M11 at junction 10.

Despite the diversion route, road users are advised to allow plenty of extra time for their journey.

A man has been arrested in connection with an incident on the M11 northbound today (Saturday, November 25).

We were on scene shortly before 11am, after receiving reports of an overturned lorry between Junction 8 for Stansted Airport and Junction 9 near Newmarket.

The man, who is in his 40s, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving by officers from our Roads Policing Unit, and is in custody pending further enquiries.

The collision has caused significant disruption, and we continue to work with Highways England, as the recovery process takes place.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision, and no injuries have been reported.

Drivers who are located prior to junction 8 will be diverted, while between junction 8 and the incident scene, traffic is moving slowly in lane 2.

Link to the diversion route can be found on the Highways England website. http://m.highways.gov.uk/website/#news

Anyone with information or dash cam footage which may help our enquiries, is asked to contact Essex Police on 101.
