Review of MHP Theatre’s production of “Winter” by Paul Regeli

Paul Regeli has long been a well-known member of MHP Theatre,
principally as a set designer. Now as dramatist, his play WINTER is
given a worthy premiere.

His “fiction rooted in fact” presents a splendid vividness of character and
incident from the early years of the Second World War. The eccentric
Frazer family, beset with their own conflicts, show us a harrowing slice of
life, spiced with moments of broad comedy.

The piece requires a very particular style of emotional underplaying
allied to a crisp pace, setting a challenge which the whole cast tackled
bravely and successfully, despite (on Friday’s performance) some loss of
attack in the final scenes.

From a cast in which all nine members are principals with important
contributions to make, it is foolish to single out star offerings. Let it
suffice to say that the diverse characters in this savagely dysfunctional
family were all sharply brought to life – credit both to acting and writing
skills.

It’s always good to see MHP presenting interesting original work. Long
may they continue.
