Roadworks in Harlow suspended until new year

ROADWORKS are set be suspended until the New Year to help reduce congestion for people visiting relatives and friends across the county during the festive period.

All but emergency works will be suspended from Friday, 22 December and will not resume until Tuesday, 2 January.

Streetlights will also stay on during the early hours of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day to help support the large number of residents who will be travelling back from festive celebrations.

Cllr Ian Grundy, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We want to make life as easy as possible for residents this Christmas and New Year.

“People often travel to see their family and friends at this time of year, or stay out late for celebrations.

“Whatever your plans, we have tried to make sure that our highways efforts over Christmas and New Year will support them.”

2017 has been a busy year on Essex roads with more than three million square metres of road surfacing completed by crews and thousands of potholes repaired. Only last week, gritter crews went out five times in 24 hours to help keep Essex roads moving.

Despite the roadworks shutdown, gritter crews will continue to be on-call 24/7 throughout the festive period to keep Essex moving.

Cllr Grundy added: “2017 has been phenomenally busy for work on our roads. Just in November we replaced more streetlights with new LEDs (3,647) than any other month.

“Resurfacing has continued throughout the year (see the programme at www.essex.gov.uk/surfacing), with a summer peak of three million square metres of roads surface dressed.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to our hard-working Essex Highways staff who have worked tirelessly throughout 2017.

“Roadworks may be suspended over Christmas and New Year’s but our gritter crews and emergency repair crews will still be on-call and I thank them for their commitment to keep the county’s roads moving.”
