Fire Fresh

CHILDREN stood and watched as a fire broke out at their school.

Rather than dialling 999, pupils at Freshwaters Primary Academy, in Harlow, took the opportunity to indulge in their history lesson.

Year 2 pupils are learning about the Great Fire of London and saw the topic brought to life when a fire crew visited.

Teresa Avey, head of school, said: “Pupils made their own cardboard houses and during the fire service visit, the models were set on fire to illustrate how quickly fire can spread.

“They got to try on fire uniforms, learn all about fire safety, as well as take part in a challenge to transfer water with buckets to show how fires were tackled in years gone by.

“The day brought the lesson to life in a controlled and safe environment. Children need to see how quickly fire spreads and to have an understanding of fire safety.”
