WORK is taking place across Essex to help keep children and young people safe from exploitation.
Child exploitation can affect any child, in any community. It can happen in everyday places and online. It includes:
Children who are being exploited often do not see themselves as victims. This means it can be hard to spot, so it is important for adults to know the warning signs.
Signs a child may need help include:
Across Essex, activity is taking place to share advice and help people understand how to keep children safe.
This includes visits to places where young people spend time, such as public transport, gyms and leisure venues. The aim is to help adults feel more confident spotting risks and knowing what to do.

There is also a focus on online safety. Parents and carers are being encouraged to have simple, open conversations with children about staying safe online. This can help children feel able to speak up if something does not feel right.
Schools and colleges are also being supported with resources to help them talk to young people about risk, relationships and staying safe.
This work is being highlighted as part of Child Exploitation Awareness Week (22 to 27 June), which helps raise awareness of the risks facing children and how they can be protected.
A spokesperson for the Essex Safeguarding Children Board said:
“Every child deserves to feel safe, and we all have a role in making that happen. Exploitation can be hard to spot, but there are signs to look out for. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s important to act.
“By being aware and speaking up, you could help protect a child and stop harm from happening.”
