The Harvey Centre’s Marquee Models Celebrates 25th Anniversary

THE Harvey Centre’s model and hobby store, Marquee Models, is celebrating its 25th Anniversary on Tuesday 23rd October with huge discounts across the store for shoppers to enjoy.

Marquee Models was first launched by Keith Hornsblow in Hertford, and the store’s first home was The Marquee Shopping Centre, hence its name. With Keith’s previous experience working for Garnells and Stortford Models, he wanted to offer a broad range of model and hobby products in a single store. Partnered alongside these more traditional hobbies were table-top and roleplaying games, a passion of Keith’s since his early years, and a developing niche market.

This niche exploded just a few short weeks after opening his first store, with a new game called Magic, The Gathering. The collectable card game based around duelling wizards was an instant hit and it is still sold and played in store today. The success of Magic helped Keith weather the inevitable ups and downs of the first few years of business and, with the success of the Hertford store, a second store was opened in 1997 at The Harvey Centre in Harlow.

The Harvey Centre store was larger than Hertford and allowed a greater range of products to be on show and to have a dedicated gaming area and tables in store. Both shops benefited from the explosion of the Pokemon card game some years later, queues sometimes forming out the door as new stock was delivered. Twenty years later, as Pokemon celebrates its anniversary, the store is seeing those original young players return with their children to learn and play the game in store at their Pokemon league, which runs every Sunday.

Over the years the nature of retail has changed considerably with the internet adding new opportunities and challenges. As a result of these, the Hertford store closed its doors for the last time in 2008, while the Harlow store expanded in 2012 – moving into a larger store, offering greater room for in store gaming and the range of products carried.

This October, the store is celebrating 25 years of memorable moments – from helping with a first model railway, to running basic intro games for Warhammer, Pokemon and many others, trying to offer a great retail experience backed up by great product knowledge and customer service.

Bryan Young, Centre Manager at The Harvey Centre says; “We’re proud to be home to such a local institution as Marquee Models. The store has gone from strength to strength over the years, facing the challenges of the ever-changing retail climate head on to deliver the product and service that our customers know and love. On behalf of all at The Harvey Centre, I’d like to congratulate them on their 25th Anniversary and wish them well for another 25 successful years!”
