The Harvey Centre Screens Iconic Footage of Harlow’s Development Over the Decades

RARE archive footage of Harlow from the 1940s to the present day is currently being played in the window of one of the centre’s stores opposite Primark. The films reveal an incredible insight into the development of Harlow, with footage showcasing how the physical and social landscape has evolved over the years. This is a fantastic opportunity for residents to get a glimpse of their past and present – they may even get to spot themselves on screen!

This footage has become available because The Independent Cinema Office (ICO) received a National Lottery grant of £66,500 for their innovative new film project, ‘New Towns, Our Town – Stories on Screen’. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project is taking place in the first four of the UK’s New Towns – Harlow, Crawley, Hemel Hempstead and Stevenage – showing rare archive film footage to residents of the town so they can explore their past.

Supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), this project seeks to increase the visibility of, and pride in, the story of the New Town movement, and the unique social history and heritage of these pioneering towns. At the time of their development there was considerable interest in and high aspirations for the New Town movement.

As well as attracting considerable media attention, the Development Corporations themselves were keen to document their progress, choosing to record much of this on film. For decades these films have been kept in various film archives with limited public access. This project has brought the films together to enable people to engage with this material once more, with free screenings, engagement activities, volunteering opportunities and educational resources being made available in these towns and beyond over the next year.

Bryan Young, Centre Manager at The Harvey Centre says, “I am hugely passionate about Harlow and have witnessed first-hand how the town has evolved over the decades to the bustling town it is today. It is a real privilege to be given the opportunity to show this very valuable footage to our customers. Our shoppers are really proud to live in Harlow and we know they will love seeing this incredible footage in their local shopping centre.”
