Great Parndon Scouts fight decision to shut them down

THE 1ST Great Parndon Scout group is fighting a decision to close them down.

Great Parndon Scouts have been in existence for decades and are based on First Avenue in Harlow near to the Town Park but due to a number of concerns, the Scout Association has decided to close them.

YH went down to speak to scout leader Scott Fincham and parent Dean Curtis to find out what had happened and what can be done.

A spokesperson for the Scout Association said: “The Scout Association is aware of the closure of 1st Great Parndon Scout Group

The local volunteer manager for Harlow has been working with the volunteers at 1st Great Parndon for some time to address concerns around the safety of the Scout Group’s operation. Unfortunately it has not been possible to reach an agreement with the current leadership team and the group has now closed.

The safety and wellbeing of young people in Scouting is our number one priority. We have been working with other Scout Group’s in the local area to find places for all the young people affected.

Situations such as these are rare and a decision to close a Scout group is never taken lightly. All of the young people in the group will have places available to them in other groups in the New Year and we hope they will continue to learn valuable skills for life.

Local Scouting does not own the building in question, it is leased from the local authority. The local volunteer management team are currently looking at how best to use the facilities going forward.
