Harlow hospital is finalist in nationwide healthcare awards

STAFF at Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust (PAHT) who care for patients with severe abdominal pain are celebrating this week after learning they have won a place in the finals of the prestigious HSJ (Health Services Journal) Awards 2019 for their work.

Abdominal pain, in the stomach or lower body, is a common problem, ranking in the top three symptoms of patients coming to emergency departments, although not all of those patients will be an acute case. It is important to assess these patients early so they can be treated in the appropriate clinical area.

Clinicians at the Harlow hospital were eager to find a way to accelerate assessment and treatment when those patients come to A&E and the procedure they designed has been commended by the judging panel for the awards, which promote the standard for healthcare excellence.

The team at PAHT designed a new patient plan which means they can be quickly transferred for assessment and be seen and treated by the clinical teams.

Not only does this reduce the time spent by the patient in A&E, it also eases pressure on the emergency department and benefits all patients coming to A&E.

Lance McCarthy, chief executive, PAHT, said: “This team demonstrate the determination of our staff to always find ways to improve our service, and I am delighted they have won this accolade. I congratulate them for getting to the finals of these hard-won awards.”
