Harlow primary school adopts famous donkey

A PRIMARY school has adopted a new pet – that does not need feeding, watering or walking.

Freshwaters Primary Academy, has adopted a donkey statue as part of the tenth anniversary of Harlow becoming the UK’s first sculpture town.

The school will receive a certificate of adoption and information about the sculpture and its artist.

Harlow Art Trust has asked for pupils to visit the donkey, which is behind the school on Pittsman’s Field, and take photos recording its condition.

The school has also been shortlisted to work with Art UK on the Masterpieces in Schools initiative and will have one of just 125 well-known sculptures placed on site. British sculpture Jane Ackroyd will work with pupils to enrich their knowledge, skills and confidence around art.

Jacinta Addison, Foundation subject leader, said: “The idea is for us to adopt the sculpture as a way of encouraging civic and personal pride in our town’s unique artworks.

“Harlow Art Trust have suggested that we might want to take inspiration from the history of the artist or where the artwork is located or explore what it is made of in a science or geography linked project.

“As part of the conservation project, pupils will be working with professional art conservators and there will be opportunities to discover more about the work they do to repair and care for artworks. This will be great for enterprise and showing children different career choices.”

Any work produced by pupils, including poems, music, drama and artwork, may be shared on the Access Harlow Sculpture Town website and in exhibitions in October as part of the Big Draw Festival.

Cristin Casey, BMAT director of performing arts, said: “We have developed a large number of networks within Harlow education and cultural providers since the launch of Inspire Harlow.

“We are honoured to adopt Donkey by Willi Soukop. I look forward to seeing how this sculpture inspires our young people in their creative learning journey.”
