Machete and knife recovered during knife crime operation in Harlow.

A MACHETE and a knife were recovered during a knife crime operation in Harlow.

It was part of Operation Sceptre, our targeted crackdown on knife crime, which began in April and is funded by £1.76million from the Home Office.

Our officers based at Stansted Airport and the dogs section joined forces with British Transport Police’s Violent Crime Task Force and the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU) to carry out checks at Harlow Town train station on Friday 9 August.

A knife arch was used to detect weapons and specialist drugs search dogs were on hand to sniff out any illegal substances.

A discarded knife was found and disposed of.

And a machete was recovered after a man was stopped and searched by BTP officers. He was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of a knife in a public place.

Courtney Murray-Wakefield, 21, of Broadwater Road, Tottenham, appeared at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 10 August.

He admitted the charge and is due to be sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on Friday 6 September.

A 43-year-old man from Harlow was stopped and search and found in possession of a pair of cutters and a stolen bicycle.

He was arrested on suspicion of going equipped for theft, theft and criminal damage, and released on bail until Friday 23 August.

During the operation, rail revenue enforcement officers also issued 11 penalties for fare evasion.

Chief Inspector Lee Devall said: “Our aim was to ensure people felt safe and to prevent criminals from travelling on the train network to move around Essex to commit crime.

“It was just one example of the work we’re doing every day with our partners around the county to tackle knife crime and serious violence.”
