Your Harlow celebrates seventh birthday

History / Wed 1st Jul 2020 at 10:00am

TODAY is our seventh birthday. We launched on July 1st, 2013.

We would just like to take a moment to thank you for looking in. We continue to grow and grow and that is many ways thanks to our growing number of readers in Harlow and beyond.

It is a simple job really. Every day we get up and tell the story of Harlow. We like to provide a balance of stories, focusing on the good. For the record, just 8% of our stories are crime related. We would like to think that in many years to come, if someone wants to find out about life in Harlow between July 1st 2013 and July 1st 2020, then our close to 19,000 stories may help.

But it really is a partnership between one journalist and 80,000 residents.

Our mantra is “No job beneath you and no job above you”. Having said that, we are proud that our work has featured on the BBC; that Sky News break our stories, we are mentioned in the House of Commons and we have worked in partnership with national newspapers.

A reminder of how we started

Back in 2012, the Carnegie Trust https://www.carnegieuktrust.org.uk chose five partners for a venture called Neighbourhood News. They asked a question: “Do you know an area that doesn’t get enough news?” Our answer was yes.

We just thought we could add to the sum of news.

Since 2008, the Harlow Citizen went, the Harlow Herald folded, leaving just the Harlow Star.

We were already running one on line newspaper, www.yourthurrock.com (est. Sept 2008) and as we were based in Harlow, this seemed like perfect opportunity.

So we launched. To be honest, it had been our junior paper for four years but in June 2017, we made a commitment to up our game and publish up to 70 stories a week.

In 2018, we had 1.6 million page views
In 2019, we had 2.8 million page views
In 2020, we have already had 2.7 million page views.

Our most read stories were:
Drive by shooting on Water Lane: 43,000 page views
B and Q lorry ploughs into house: 42,000 page views
Covid-19 incident at Holy Cross Primary: 36,000 page views

In 2019, we published just over 4,000 stories,
In 2020, we have already published 2,200 stories.

Over the next two months we should pass over 20,000 stories.

We would like to thank all those who have backed us, especially those at the beginning.

You can find us here or on https://www.facebook.com/yourharlow/ and www.twitter.cm/yourharlow and https://www.youtube.com/user/yourharlowfilms

So, as we say “Eat, Sleep, Report, Repeat”.
