Harlow MP Robert Halfon on NHS, Permitted Developments, Boris Johnson and much more

News / Sat 25th Jul 2020 at 09:01am

IT HAS been over four months since we physically interviewed Harlow MP Robert Halfon. The MP has been shielding since March.

Usually, YH catches up with him ever week, out and about in Harlow but things have been different since March

We took this opportunity to go through a large number of issues.

In this piece, we discussed how he has coped with shielding; constituency work; PM Boris Johnson’s handling of the coronavirus crisis; his education committee; the NHS; permitted developments and opportunities for young people in Harlow and finally a message of hope for the people of Harlow.

It is rare that we would do a twenty minute piece, so we may break it down to subject sized pieces.

Our MP is right in saying that MP's in BOTH main political parties thought that the relaxing of Permitted Development Rights in 2013 was not a bad idea, because both supported the rush to provide new homes based on numbers and not quality. If you ever doubted that our MP is out of touch with reality when it comes to the housing crisis, just take a look at this film. I wonder how many visitors to his surgery are desperate for affordable housing .... I bet most want council housing at a council house rent, not ones that are up to 80% of market rents or ones for sale.. Councils should have always remained in control of what and where homes could be built in their area but he now suggests that an independent adjudication system should be set up (more red tape, no local connection?) .... you really could not make it up! As for the new Junction 7a .... well we all know that residents wanted to see a northern bypass but his fellow Conservatives at County Hall were never going to fork out for that.

I haven't watched the vid, I prefer to read than watch news items. Some numbers I found today r.e. coronavirus crisis: Scotland - 9 Deaths (0.16 per 100,000 population) Northern Ireland - 5 Deaths (0.26 per 100,000 population) Wales - 38 Deaths (1.18 per 100,000 population) England - 1833 Deaths (3.20 per 100,000 population) If RH is claiming in any way shape or form that Johnson’s handling of the coronavirus crisis is positive, then "out of touch with reality" extends further than sub-standard housing. Also, I don't know if RH mentioned that 13,000 Harlow residents are having their wages covered by the government furlough scheme - which will be coming to an end soon. It was mentioned here: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/jul/25/economic-recovery-hit-and-miss-signs-july-slowdown
