AWARD-winning Harlow charity Livewire prepare to release five short films and release exclusive news of new project.

“The new normal” will take time to adjust to and being away from others from school and friends has had a huge impact on young people’s mental health and wellbeing in Harlow and across the Uk.

This is why Livewire decided, through funding from The Essex Community Foundation, to put on a series of small workshops to help young people get used to working with each other in a safe, creative space. With support from The Playhouse Harlow; Livewire were able to adapt their usual “Theatre Challenge” process and devise a number of films comprising of original drama, dance and music.

Each day fifteen different young people took part and then split into 3 bubbles – drama, dance and music. Every day had a theme that would end up with an original song being written, a poem and ideas for drama devised as well as a series of dances to help express the theme. Over the first week the Livewire members looked at what made them anxious, what did they care about? What made them angry? What did they want to be when they was little and what made them feel hopeful?

During the second week the members returned to their ‘bubbles’ and recorded their songs, dances and pieces of drama that would then be edited and turned into five short films featuring nearly 75 young people!

Creative Director Sam Ashford spoke to us and said “It was an incredible feeling to get back to working face to face with the young people. It’s important that we provide a space for young people to rediscover their confidence, to motivate them and help them find their creativity again. After so long not seeing each other we were just happy to be back creating, we weren’t concerned with the final result.

However, young people constantly surprise me, they arrived full of enthusiasm, ideas and energy and now we have five short films that I am so proud to show to the world! We hope these young people get the recognition they deserve, I am so proud of their achievement”.

A parent commented “My children haven’t been out of the house for months, they haven’t mixed with others for so long that they felt nervous about going back to school or being near other people. They came away from Livewire buzzing and full of beans, I saw those old smiles that I hadn’t seen for so long and now they can’t wait to get back to school as they know that it can’t be done safely and still be fun. Thank you Livewire, once again you’ve helped us as a family in ways you’ll never know!”

Rory Davies, General manager at The Playhouse commented “It was so lovely to have noise in the building again. All of our staff felt enthused by the the young people from Livewire. We are a creative space, a community hub, without people devising, singing, creating new theatre it’s just not right. We were honoured to have Livewire in, they are working so hard to create healthier and happier lives and we can’t wait to see their films this week! And we are delighted to have them in to run our Summer School!”

You can watch each film at 5 O’clock each day this week starting on Monday 17th August via this link:
